Eating Apples Every Day Keeps Strokes Away!

People in a 10-year Dutch study who ate fruits and vegetables with white flesh reduced their risk of stroke by 52 percent compared to those who ate the least. Apples and pears were the most commonly eaten white foods in this study, accounting for 55 percent of the total.

Yes, apples have red and green skin and pears have green skin, but what matters is the color of the fruit’s flesh!  Apple juice and applesauce also counted towards “white” food consumption.

So, what makes these foods so effective? Most of the foods in the study were rich in fiber, but apples and pears stood out because they’re packed with quercetin, a powerful antioxidant called a flavanol. Previous studies have shown that dietary fiber can lower blood pressure, which helps lower your risk of stroke, and that a high intake of flavanols can cut stroke risk by 20 percent.

The next time you’re at the grocery store, add some apples and pears to your cart. Each 25-gram-per-day increase in white fruits and veggies lowered stroke risk by 9 percent, so just one extra piece of white flesh fruit per day can work wonders!
