Honey-Sweet Remedies Clobber Your Cold Symptoms

Honey and — coffee?
Who knew this duo could fight off cold symptoms? But a three-year study showed a combination of coffee and honey significantly eased chronic coughing. Simply stir together 3/4 cup honey and 1/2 cup instant coffee crystals until it forms a thick paste. Three times a day for one week, measure 1 tablespoon of this mixture into 7 ounces of warm water, mix, and drink. The caffeine will relax and widen the major air passages in your lungs, while the honey is, itself, a cough suppressant.

Honey and tea.
For a delicious three-in-one remedy that soothes a sore throat, stops a cough, and helps you sleep, stir a little honey into a steaming cup of chamomile tea. The honey will calm your cough and ease sore throat pain, while the chamomile will help you relax for a good night’s sleep.

Honey and pineapple.
Pineapple contains bromelain, a natural substance that helps reduce mucus. Paired with honey is the perfect alternative to harsh prescription cough syrups. For example, your doctor may have prescribed Tussionex, an antihistamine, narcotic cough suppressant combo. Be careful. If not taken correctly, Tussionex can cause life-threatening side effects. Make sure you’re getting the correct dose by using a marked measuring spoon or syringe — not a regular tablespoon.
