Canadian researchers uncovered the winning formula: a high-protein, high-dairy diet combined with exercise. The Improving Diet, Exercise, and Lifestyle (IDEAL) for Women Study followed 90 overweight women aged 19 to 45, divided into three groups.

One group consumed more dairy and protein while reducing carbs. This group also drank Splenda-sweetened 1-percent chocolate milk twice daily—once right after exercise and again five hours later.

After 16 weeks of aerobic exercise and weightlifting, they achieved similar weight loss as the other groups but lost more fat, gained more muscle, and improved strength significantly.

The benefits likely come from dairy’s calcium and milk proteins, which help shed fat while preserving muscle.
